Bastian Schweinsteiger scored in injury time to give defending Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich a 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg in the opening match of the new season on Friday (August 20).

Schweinsteiger pounced at the far post, knocking home a long ball from France's Franck Ribery.  Thomas Mueller had given Bayern an early lead before Edin Dzeko equalized in the 55th minute.

Bayern Munich kicked off the new Bundesliga season on Friday (August 20) - and quickly served notice that they will, as usual, be a force in German football.

World Cup joint-top scorer Thomas Mueller fired the hosts into the lead in the ninth minute after combining well with Toni Kroos.  Watching national coach Joachim Loew will have been pleased with that finishing.

Making his debut as the first English coach in the league, Steve McLaren made the bold move of leaving playmaker Zvjezdan Misimovic on the bench in the first half.  But the former England manager brought Misimovic in at the start of the second half - and the Bosnian soon made a difference.

After new signing Mario Mandzukic had hit the post in the 47th, Misimovic almost made the most of a poor clearance by Bayern goalkeeper Hans-Joerg Butt  Last season's Bundesliga top scorer Edin Dzeko grabbed a deserved 55th minute equaliser for Wolfsburg when he headed in a Misimovic corner.

The 2009 champions had further chances before Bayern hit back deep into added time when an unmarked Bastian Schweinsteiger tapped in a Franck Ribery cross at the far post.  A good test for Louis van Gaal's men - they came out on top 2-1.  AP
